More AT&T Android news.  The iPhone carrier will release its first 1GHz Android OS-powered smartphone, the Samsung Captivate, “in the coming months.”

The announcement came today via an AT&T Mobility press release, without any price or availability details.  However, the carrier did give us some important information about its first high-end Android phone. 

Essentially a Galaxy S, the Samsung Captivate is powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird CPU (Samsung’s Snapdragon alternative), features a 4-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 7.2Mbps HSPA 3G mobile data connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, a 5MP camera with 720p HD video recording, and 16GB of “expandable memory.”

We’ve been on 32GB microSDHC memory card watch for nearly a year.  A few weeks ago we told you about the high-capacity cards showing up for purchase on eBay. Today a more reliable retailer has thrown its hat in the 32GB microSD ring: Amazon.

Amazon is currently selling the SanDisk 32GB microSDHC card via the third-party retailer Komputerbay.  The card is $180, which is a bit steep, but if you’re not comfortable purchasing a card from an unknown eBay seller, Amazon’s reputation should make you feel better (but you should be okay purchasing from eBay if you’re careful to choose a seller with an excellent eBay rating).

Most modern Windows Mobile and Android OS smartphones are compatible with 32GB microSDHC cards.

It’s been months since we updated you on the HTC Desire, a Snapdragon-powered Android OS smartphone originally thought to be headed to AT&T.  That may still be the case, though a home at AT&T is as yet unconfirmed. What is confirmed is that the Desire is indeed headed for the U.S.

We’ve just received word from an HTC PR rep that the Desire will arrive in the United States “via select regional operators beginning this August.”  It’s currently unclear what exactly is meant by “regional operators,” but if the Desire remains a GSM/UMTS handset when it arrives stateside, it’ll have to come via AT&T, T-Mobile or a similar network.

On July 1st, that will change. The AT&T-powered wireless Internet connection offered at Starbucks locations around the country will become free for all customers on that day.  The company made the announcement today at a WIRED business conference.  Starbucks also announced a new in-store network:

“…in partnership with Yahoo!, which will debut later this fall.  This online experience – available only in U.S. company operated Starbucks stores – will be unique in its content offerings, allowing customers free unrestricted access to various paid sites and services such as wsj.com, exclusive content and previews, free downloads, local community news and activities, on their laptops, tablets or smart phones. ”

When Microsoft’s updated Windows Live Hotmail begins to roll out this summer, smartphone users will discover a useful new addition to the service: push support.

Powered by Exchange ActiveSync, the new Live Hotmail will allow smartphone (Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, Android, iPhone, etc.) users to receive new email over the air in real time.  Live Hotmail Contacts and Live Calendar entries will also be available via the push service, and you’ll be able to set your device to sync all three categories of data, or pick and choose.  New email will instantly be pushed to any phone supporting Exchange, and changes made to your calendar and/or contacts via a phone will be mirrored to your web account (and vice versa).

These features are nothing new – Google has been offering the same Exchange-powered service for Gmail and Google Calendar for some time.  Smartphone users who depend on push-based services on their smartphones may now find Live Hotmail a viable alternative to Gmail and other similar services.

There’s no firm date on when we might expect to see the Exchange-enhanced Hotmail service go live, but Paul Thurrott reports that the rollout will begin as soon as June 15.

Amazon currently has the best price for a SanDisk 8GB microSDHC flash memory card with included USB card reader: $13.48 plus shipping. 

The included SanDisk MobileMate reader makes getting files – photos, music, video, etc. – onto and off of the microSD card as simple as drag-and-drop (Mac or PC).  It’s also very small, so it’s no problem to keep handy.

Don’t care about the USB reader?  Save a few bucks on the bare card.

If you thought you’d seen the last of Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone debuts – think again.  On Thursday, Verizon Wireless will release the LG Fathom, a new Windows Mobile slider.

We haven’t seen much WinMo action from LG of late, but we hear the company is planning big things for Windows Phone 7.  If you’re in the market for a WM6.5.3 Pro smartphone, here are the details:

The LG Fathom has a 3.2-inch 480×800 touchscreen, a slide-to-hide QWERTY keyboard, a 1GHz processor (make/model unknown) 256MB of RAM, GPS, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, EV-DO Rev. A mobile broadband, a microSDHC memory card slot and a 3.5MP camera.  International travelers will also appreciate the Fathom’s built-in GSM/UMTS transceiver for use outside the U.S.

Verizon Wireless will roll out the Fathom first through business sales channels on May 27, with wider availability slated for June 3.

If you have a Windows Mobile smartphone – and are in the mood for a little nostalgic, dot-eating, ghost chasing fun – you can download and enjoy PAC-MAN, Ms. PAC-MAN and Super PAC-MAN in just a minute or two and remember what video games used to be like.

But that will change.

Engadget is reporting that Google will “eventually” stop selling the Nexus One online (or presumably in any other manner), and will instead shift to a carrier distribution strategy. Google, it seems, has come to believe that prospective owners would like to actually hold and use a smartphone before committing to it for two years.  Go figure.

The story does not provide a date when this change might take place, but it does state that Google plans to use its existing Nexus One web page to "promote ‘a variety of Android phones available globally.’"

While the limited success of their direct-sale model must have disappointed the Google folks who put it in place, this change is a good one; if the Nexus One begins showing up in T-Mobile – and even AT&T – stores, sales of the handset will certainly increase.

Compatible with Windows Mobile 6.x touchscreen smartphones, CloudFiles allows you to browse your Dropbox files, upload new files, create and edit folders, view account information, and even create a Dropbox account if you don’t already have one.

T-Mobile will soon be adding another Android-powered smartphone to its lineup, the GPS-focused Garminfone. 

The smartphone will debut this spring (May or June) on the T-Mobile network and include Garmin’s navigation software:

"Customers can navigate to an address simply by clicking on it from a text message or e-mail, contact, calendar appointment, or web page. Garminfone can even remember where you are parked and navigate you back to your car. The … camera automatically geotags images so you can navigate back to where your family vacation photos were taken, e-mail geo-tagged images to friends and family members, or post geo-tagged pictures on the Web for others to enjoy. Helpful Garmin travel applications such as dynamic, real-time traffic; weather local events; movie listings; and gas prices are pre-installed and easy to access and use.”

Hardware features include 3G connectivity, a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 3MP autofocus camera, Wi-Fi, and a microSDHC memory card slot for up to 32GB of storage.

Strangely familiar…

Of course, when asked about the photo, Dell responded that they “do not comment on speculation, rumor or unannounced products." Translation: get ready for tablets!

While there are already Android OS tablets available for purchase, non have (so far) challenged the iPad. 

But that will change.

A page posted at the Verizon Wireless web site has verified an April release of the upcoming HTC Incredible.  It has also confirmed that Incredible will be part of the Droid Family (joining the Motorola Droid and Droid Eris) and that it will either go on sale or begin shipping April 29th.

The HTC Incredible is an Android-powered smartphone similar, in some respects, to Google’s Nexus One.  Leaked specs indicate a 1GHz Snapdragon SoC CPU, a 3.7-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen, an 8MP camera with auto focus, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of flash storage, Android OS v2.1, and EV-DO data support.

Update 4/15/10: The HTC Incredible will go on sale April 29th with a retail price of $199 with a two-year service agreement and $100 mail-in rebate.

32GB microSD cards will soon be a reality – but it’ll cost you.  SanDisk has just announced that it will begin shipping the 32GB version of its microSDHC flash memory cards in the U.S. next month, for the low-low price of $199 per unit.

The company is already accepting pre-orders for the card (model SDSDQY-032G-A11M).  Third-party retailers such as Amazon.com and Buy.com will likely begin selling the 32GB card in the next few weeks, and almost certainly for less than the sky-high MSRP.

Many smartphones running Windows Mobile and Android are already compatible with 32GB microSDHC memory cards.  Check your product literature for details.
