An extremely fine checkerboard pattern molded into the lid feels almost like the texture of knurled metal to the touch. Unfortunately, that’s about where the analogy ends. There’s no metal to speak of here, and a rap on the surface with a fingernail returns an cheap, hollow feel. And it is cheap. Closing the screen and carrying the notebook around, the lid bows visibly under the thumb. To its credit, the texture lends more visual appeal and resistance to fingerprints than a plain sheet of the same cheap plastic would, but we can’t abide by the otherwise flimsy feel of the whole display enclosure.

For a 15.6” notebook, the Lenovo IdeaPad U550 is very thin measuring 14.84 x 9.88 x 0.94/1.15 inch and it weighs a little over 5 pounds. The heavily textured cover has a very dark brown (like deep dark chocolate) color and a sculpted diamond pattern. Inside, the IdeaPad U550 has a bright, glossy 15.6” LED backlit display that has 1366 x 768 native resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The screen has very good color contrast and images and videos look very sharp on the screen, but the viewing angle is quite small. Two people can watch a movie on the notebook together only if they sit very close.

In case you haven't noticed, Lenovo has a thing for re-introducing machines with a tweak here or there and maybe a dash of new functionality. The IdeaPad S10-2 is a great example of that, as is the partially-new, multi-touch ThinkPad T400s. Frankly, the ThinkPad T400s that emerged in June wasn't all that different than the original ThinkPad T400. The T400s offered a slimmer profile, a tweaked keyboard, a few new internal hardware upgrades and optional WAN connectivity. The new T400s, which is equipped with Windows 7 and a multi-touch display, adds one major feature: touch.

But really, is adding touch input to an already decent notebook enough to make you think twice about buying a Lenovo? Or better yet, could it convince existing T400 and T400s owners to upgrade? In the pages to come, we'll take a look at how think machine performs with a new operating system. While netbooks are certainly garnering the majority of the notebook spotlight these days, thin-and-light machines such as Acer's Timeline series and MSI's X-Slim family are making a move for the forefront. Just this week, Lenovo also introduced its first significant foray into the segment, and we have to say, it should provide some solid competition in the burgeoning market.

The 14" U450p is a perfect in-between for folks not happy with acramped ultraportable and not able (or willing, as the case may be) tolug around a full-size 15" notebook. Boasting an expected Intel CULV(Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) platform, the machine can be ordered (andthen customized) in two main flavors. The first offers up a 1.30GHzPentium SU2700 CPU with Intel X4500 integrated graphics, Vista HomePremium, 3GB of DDR3 RAM, a 14" antiglare panel (1366 x 768resolution), a traditional touchpad, 250GB 5400RPM hard drive, DVDRecordable w/ X6 Ultrabase, a 6-cell battery, Wi-Fi module and aone-year warranty for $799.

The second option ups the CPU to a Core 2 Solo SU3500 at 1.40GHz; not aspeed demon by any stretch of the imagination, but a small andappreciated upgrade regardless. The $899 rig also adds an extragigabyte of RAM, utilizes the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium andsnags a 320GB hard drive. Both machines currently show a four week leadtime, so if you're in the market but have time to spare, the U450p justmight fit the bill.
