Even if this laptop is a 16 inch one and it is meant to be used as a desktop replacement, we were surprised to find that there is no numerical pad which is quite common for big laptops. Hopefully, it will not affect game-play that much. Either than that, the keys offer positive feedback and they have a LED which will illuminate the keys so you can easily type in the dark. The touchpad is responsive, very ok to use but it’s difficult to play shooters using it so we would go with an external mouse. Just like we expected, the speakers are awesome. This means you don’t have to buy headphones to enjoy the sound effect of games. You will notice that unlike most laptops, the Dell Studio XPS 16 has the speakers located on both sides of the keyboard. You also have an integrated subwoofer that provides just enough bass so you can enjoy some of your favorite tunes. No complaints here, you will hear those nasty monsters breathing heavily just around the corner.

As far as performance goes, it is does not have the best benchmark scores around but the ATI Radeon HD 3670 dedicated video card is going to offer a pleasant experience. 3D graphics are ok and you will be able to play demanding games. Let’s just say this laptop is an ok deal for people who don’t want to spend $3000 on a good gaming laptop. Be careful, this laptop is hot! No, I mean literally. It seems to have an overheating problem which will is noticeable after a few hours of use. This is because of the powerful processor and the video card that produce a lot of heat which apparently the coolers cannot handle very well. If you are going to use this laptop on a desk or table instead of actually placing it on your lap, then the heat will not be such a disturbing factor. Te good thing is, it doesn’t make much noise. The fans are pretty quiet and the only thing which makes some annoying noise is the DVD drive every time you insert or eject a disc. As we expected, battery life is not one of the strongest points of this laptop. In fact, battery life is a not string point in almost any gaming laptop. This is due (AGAIN) to the powerful components inside. Considering that this laptop is meant to be a desktop replacement, you should have no arguments here. We would expect more than 2 hours and 50 minutes from a 9-cell battery but yet again we don’t plan on keeping this laptop away from a power outlet for too long.

The bottom line is that no matter how much you want to save some money it’s really difficult to do that if you want a gaming laptop. They are an expensive investment but you can be sure that the more you pay, the better specs you will have and the more you will enjoy it. You could try looking into some refurbished laptops if you are on a really low budget, although we recommend you wait and save some money as nothing beats the Alienware M17x at gaming performance.
