Dell’s Nickelodeon Edition Netbook Makes The Kids Go Wild

Anyone paying even the slightest attention to the evolution of Dell designs would know that the company has come a long way since the beige box days in the late 90s, but even for the newer, fresher, hipper Dell,this one's pretty radical. Just as the company decided to dump its Inspiron Mini 12 in favor of keeping just the Mini 10 around, it has decided to tag-team with what's likely the most popular network for kids on television today: Nickelodeon.

In a cute, almost slimy joint announcement today, the two are trying to prove that "fun and education can mix" with the Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition, a Mini 10v-based netbook that's obviously designed for kids aged 6 to 16. The giveaway is the trademark green slimethat's oozing on the lid and underneath the keyboard, not to mention the pre-loaded educational content for growing those feeble brains. The specifications are all pretty familiar outside of that, with the machine featuring a 10.1" color LCD, built-in Wi-Fi, 1GB of memory, a1.3MP webcam and an easily personalized user interface. Heck, there are even a few other design choices inspired by iCarly and SpongeBob SquarePants available through Dell's growing Design Studio.

The new kid-friendly machine will first land on Walmart this October,with pricing and other details to be released as that month drawscloser.

The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition opens a window to entertainment and education that parents can easily monitor and control as children grow more Internet savvy. It’s a durable and highly portable netbook that joins together excellent technology, content, parental controls and shopping security from the trusted names of Dell and Nickelodeon.

Designed with kids in mind, the Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition is wrapped in an eye-catching, Nickelodeon-inspired “slime” artwork scheme.

Dell Inspiron 15 Design and features

Out of all the sub-US$1000 laptops we've reviewed recently, the Dell Inspiron 15 is the only one to sacrifice the numpad, leaving only the standard keyboard for typing. It's also the only model opting to use a Core 2 Duo processor, with its competitors limited to the lower-end Pentiums, Celerons and Athlons. Our particular model came in at US$999, but if you choose the Celeron route you can get it down to US$699.

While we received a black laptop, you can switch to ice blue for free, or add an extra US$44 for dark blue, red, white or pink. You can also get some rather funky Mike Ming designs on the lid, but this will cost you an extra US$124.30 just to stand out.

Regardless of the colour option you choose, the interior will stay piano black, with a single silver power button featured in the middle at the top under the monitor. The tiny speaker grille sits above this, although given the sound quality we'd suggest you stick to headphones.

The touchpad, with its textured surface, is nice enough to use, and has circular scrolling enabled — that is, you start dragging down or up in the scroll zone, then move your finger in a clockwise circle to continue scrolling down, or a counter clockwise circle to scroll up.

The 15.6-inch, 1366x768 glossy screen is nice and bright, with a webcam situated at the top. The left side features two USB ports, a VGA port and 100Mb Ethernet, while the right features a single USB port, DVD+-RW and ExpressCard 34 slot. The front lip is kept similarly simple, with an indicator light for power, headphone and microphone jack and an SD/MMC/MS card reader. Wireless communications are limited to 802.11g — you'll find no 802.11n or Bluetooth here, but both are optional extras for US$29.70 and $13.20 respectively.

Software-wise, the Inspiron 15 runs on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, with our review sample arriving with McAfee Security Center 30-day trial, Microsoft Office 2007 trial and Roxio Creator DE. Dell has also bundled its own software, including a dock that sits at the top of the screen purely for quick access to applications; DataSafe, which gives you 2GB storage online for free for 12 months, Dell Remote Access, webcam apps and a wireless configuration utility.

Performance

Inside our review sample was a Core 2 Duo T600 at 2.1GHz, 3GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive. This interesting mix gave us impressive results for a sub-AU$1000 laptop, scoring 874 in 3DMark06 (only bested by the Toshiba L500D), and 4043 in PCMark05, making it OK for casual gaming (but certainly not capable of playing new titles), and excellent for general use and office work.

Turning off all power-saving features and setting screen brightness and volume to maximum, we played back an XviD file and the battery lasted two hours, 39 minutes and 47 seconds, longer than any other sub-AU$1000 notebook we've tested. It must be noted this is an incredibly harsh test — with casual use, battery life will be an order of magnitude longer.

The Dell Inspiron 15 is likely the best bang for buck you'll get for US$1000, from its battery life to its upgrade options. We do miss the numpad, but the rest is perfect for the budget-conscious user.

You know, Dell's Vostro lineup is really turning into one to watch. While it's admittedly aimed at the business users in the crowd, a lot of the systems are perfectly suitable for everyday consumers. Take the company's newest offerings, for instance. The Vostro 1014, 1015 and1088 are all attractive notebooks with a decent array of specifications and an even more reasonable price tag. Oh, and did we mention that the look the part as well?

While none of the three appear to be ready for selling on Dell'swebsite, here's what we know about the trio. They offer up 14.1" and15.6" displays, the latest Core 2 Duo processors, improved battery life(though no specific figure is given--big surprise!), a built-in 5-in-1card reader, optional webcam (2.0MP) and your choice of three color options: black, deep cherry red and blue. There's also an integrated modem for times when Wi-Fi feels so far away.

Dell tells us that these are already being offered in select parts of Europe starting at just over $300, and they'll be available inAsia/Japan shortly. North Americans will have to wait for "several more months" before being able to dive in--patience, patience!

Dell's got a new lineup heading your way this fall, this time taking its low-cost Inspiron laptop brand to thin land. The Inspiron Z "family" isn't anything stunningly slim, and the 11.6-inch, disc drive free Z in the low end looks positively netbook-ish, but all the laptops are CULV-powered and should probably be arriving at pretty trim price points to fend off the likes of Acer's Timeline series. Talk about a short life. Dell's Inspiron Mini 12 launched in late October of last year, and it seems the company's largest netbook is already being canned before it can even celebrate its first birthday.It's almost tragic, isn't it? With fewer and fewer netbooks launching these days with 11.6" and 12" displays, it really hurts to see yet another big guy take the fall. After all, these 12" machines usually have keyboards that are much larger and far more comfortable to use than those on the 10" machines, but we suspect the sales volume just didn't warrant an extension.

Indeed, the Mini 12 launched at around $600, which is dangerously close to the price put on 13.3" and 14" thin-and-light notebooks from MSI and company. Of course, those that closely follow Dell's moves won't find this as a shock. Recently, the company's Inspiron Mini 9 netbook wa salso canned with nary a peep from the parent company, and the 12"version is also vanishing without any official word. But trust us, you won't have much luck if you surf over to Dell's website and attempt to order one.

So, in the larger picture, what exactly does this mean? Does it signal that larger netbooks are unwanted? Does it signal that the $299 priceceiling is made of more than glass? We're guessing that the Mini 12 would've done much better below $600, but we can understand why Dell was forced to sell it for more. Who knows--maybe the Mini 12 will resurface with great specs and a new face.

Dell claims that this machine can morph from "box to business in less than four minutes," and with the optional VESA mount, you can just clamp this onto a desk or wall in order to save lots of desk space. As for specs, you'll find a selection of Intel Core 2 Duo processors, optional integrated Wi-Fi, a wireless mouse and keyboard, an integrated webcam, Gigabit Ethernet, and a video conferencing solution to boot. Granted, we have all ideas that this machine would look a lot less spectacular on a plain ole stand, but there's never been a better time to snap up that translucent desk you've been eying over at Ikea.

The 19" panel is joined by 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a built-in kickstand and Windows Vista. It's expected to land first (as in, today) over in Asia, while North American consumers must wait until August 11th to buy in. Prices will start at $629, but you know you'll end up spending more on those must-have upgrades.

The Dell XPS 400 is among the first systems we've seen based on Intel's new Viiv technology platform. While the XPS 400's $2,284 price tag may seem high, its powerful dual-core processor and entertainment-friendly feature set provide everything you'll need to watch and record TV programs, create DVDs, and manage multimedia files. A big chunk of the price goes toward the bundled 20-inch Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW wide-screen LCD monitor; pricing for the Viiv-branded XPS 400 starts at $1,758 with a 19-inch LCD. Though it has a slower processor, a less powerful graphics card, no monitor, and only a single tuner, the $1,199 HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7360n is the better value. We prefer the Dell XPS 400, however, for its configuration options, which let you equip the system with dual TV tuners, multiple hard drives, and more powerful graphics.

A system with the Intel Viiv sticker is supposed to be optimized for multimedia use. The Viiv spec mandates the Windows Media Center Edition operating system, 5.1 or 7.1 audio, and Intel's Quick Resume instant on/off technology, which basically cuts the audio and video while keeping the PC running. The dual-core CPU--a Pentium D 940 in this case--is also part of the spec, and it's one of the more useful requirements of Viiv. Other things we think you need for a great entertainment PC, such as a TV tuner and a decent video card (both of which come included), are not part of the Viiv requirement, so just looking for the Viiv sticker may not be enough for your needs. Fortunately, the XPS 400 goes far beyond the bare minimum requirements.

The system is housed in a glossy white BTX case with a silver front bezel and black drive-bay covers. The midtower design will add a touch of class to any home office, but it's too big to fit in with your home-entertainment components. A double-layer DVD burner and a DVD-ROM drive occupy the full-size external drive bays, and one of the two 3.5-inch bays contains a 13-in-1 media-card reader. Two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, and headphone and microphone jacks are mounted below the drive bays. Five additional USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and 5.1 audio jacks are located at the rear of the system. The XPS 400 can be configured with a high-end Creative Audigy 2 or X-Fi audio card, but our test system included neither, relying instead on an integrated audio solution. For most users, even home-theater users, the integrated audio is fine.

The system's chassis is completely tool-free, making it easy to install and remove drives and expansion cards. The XPS 400 relies on two system fans and a BTX airflow scheme to keep components from overheating. The machine is fairly quiet, with the only discernible noise coming from the graphics card fan. The interior is tightly packed, and the single x16 PCI Express slot holds a 256MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 graphics card. Two PCI slots hold a dual TV tuner card and a dual-port FireWire card, leaving two x1 PCI Express slots and one PCI slot available for future expansion. The two hard drive bays mounted at the bottom of the case hold dual Maxtor 250GB Serial ATA (SATA) drives in a DataSafe (RAID 1) configuration for added data protection. If you'd rather skip the redundant protection, you can have Dell configure the drives for RAID 0 and reclaim the extra 250GB of drive space for storing recorded TV programs and other hefty multimedia files.

The XPS 400 uses a Dell-branded motherboard based on Intel's 945P chipset and is powered by Intel's dual-core Pentium D 940 processor running at 3.2GHz. On CNET Labs' BAPCo SysMark 2004 application benchmarks, it turned in admirable numbers, second only to those of the $3,695 Polywell Poly 975MCE-E system. The Polywell's 3.46GHz Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 CPU helped it beat the Dell system by 15 percent. The Dell, in turn, ran 11 percent faster than the $1,747 Alienware Area-51 3550, which uses a 2.8GHz Intel Pentium D 920 and includes neither monitor nor speakers.

While it can't hold a candle to today's SLI-powered gaming systems, a score of 46.6 frames per second (fps) on our 1,024x768-resolution Doom 3 test proves that the XPS 400 can pull double duty as a midrange gaming box. For an extra $280, you can order the system with a GeForce 7800 GTX graphics card to boost its 3D performance. Even without the GPU upgrade, our XPS 400 test system's GeForce 6800 outclasses the budget GeForce 6200 SE on HP's Viiv PC, the Pavilion Media Center TV m7360n, as well as the ATI Radeon X300 SE graphics card on the iBuyPower Viiv-350.

We put the Dell XPS 400's dual-core chip to work burning a DVD in the background while playing Doom 3. We did not experience any hiccups, and the DVD burn completed without errors. The dual TV tuner, which can capture two standard-def sources, did a decent job displaying live TV and recording TV signals, but certain channels exhibited clipping and signal noise--a common occurrence with PC-based DVRs.

Our XPS 400 shipped with a wired Dell multimedia keyboard and mouse rather than a wireless setup, which Dell offers for an additional $50. It also shipped with Dell's 5650 100-watt 5.1 speakers and its UltraSharp 2005FPW LCD monitor, an impressive 20-inch wide-screen display with a native resolution of 1,680x1,050. Those speakers do not currently seem to be available via Dell's configurator, but the monitor is a good size for this type of PC--not too big to preclude regular Windows work but big enough to make watching TV and DVDs enjoyable.

Along with Windows Media Center Edition, the XPS 400 comes with Corel's WordPerfect Office 12 and CyberLink's PowerDVD. You also get a trial version of Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security app along with Dell's Starter Entertainment Pack, which includes basic photo-editing and digital-jukebox software. Dell's Media Center IR receiver and remote are part of the bundle.

Dell provides a three-year warranty with the Viiv version of the XPS 400, which includes next-business-day onsite service and 24/7 rapid-response telephone support by a team of XPS-certified technicians--a different level of service than Dell's non-XPS systems--a.k.a. Dimensions--receive. For $49, you can upgrade to an even higher level of service called XPS Plus Solutions. This gives you 30 days of access to Dell On Call, which provides assistance with general how-to questions.

Energy efficient PCs made from recyclable materials and programs to help cut electronic waste could help drive PC growth.

After consumer electronics and mobile phones, it's now the turn of computers to turn green. Leading vendors such as Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell and Acer are adopting ‘green computing' in a major way . Apart from rolling out energy-efficient computers made from recyclable materials, the vendors are launching recycling programmes to reduce e-waste.

The vendors feel their latest initiatives will boost sales amidst the slowdown, since green computers consume much less energy and reduce the total cost of ownership. Analysts, too, feel green computing could become the next growth driver at a time when market watchers like IDC have projected that there could be a drop in PC sales in India this year.

Interestingly, the government is also coming up with energy efficiency standards for computers. "Initially, we will come up with energy standards for desktops and monitors, and eventually for laptops,"

Be that as it may, the vendors claim sensitivity for green PC is already growing amongst corporates and IT/BPO firms. "Corporates are, for sure, seeing the benefits of cost savings. However, the consumer segment is yet to wake up to green computing," The BEE labelling is expected to fill that gap and create consumer awareness about energy efficient computers.

HP has just rolled out a notebook battery replacement programme in India. "During discussions with CIOs, we found that many of them are clueless about the best way to dispose their notebook batteries. We expect more than 500 enterprise customers to benefit from this," said HP manager—.

Dell, too, is betting on green computing to drive growth.

"At a time when companies are reducing costs, energy efficient computers and servers will find more acceptance. It makes business sense for enterprises and consumers since these products enable huge savings on power bills throughout the product's lifecycle," a Dell spokeswoman said.

Apart from innovations in the product line, Dell and HP have rolled out recycling programmes for safe disposal of old equipment in an environment responsible manner. Dell is even innovating packaging by making them from sustainable material. HP's design centre is working on developing several such products.
