ASUS Eee PC 1015PN in White

With built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, users can stay connected wherever they go. The 92%-scaled ergonomic keyboard and Multi-Touch touchpad make it a breeze to type and navigate through content. The 1015pn's 250GB hard drive and 500GB of free webstorage provide a wealth of storage and backup capabilities. The 1015pn also features a chiclet keyboard for added style and comfort.

I've owned a few Asus netbooks in the past so I know Asus makes good machines. I had purchased the 1015PED but returned it when I saw that the 1015PN was about to ship. I ordered the 1015PN primarily for the dual processors, plus I was interested in seeing what type of performance I would get out of the GPU.

So far, I like the device. I tried a couple of HD video clips and the 1015PN displayed them without a hitch. Hulu, Netflix, and my slingbox streaming all worked fine. Battery life is as expected. Running the unit in high performance mode with wifi gets you about 5-6 hours of steady use.

Straight out of the box this machine is amazing! It comes with windows 7 starter which I hated, but unless you know what you are doing I don't recommend removing it. I actually wiped the OS and put on it Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, which caused some issues. If you are going to upgrade make sure you have a flash drive with all the drivers from Asus's site on it and install them before getting on the internet, otherwise your video card will keep crashing and you will get blue screens and then your computer will restart. So after upgrading and putting on all the drivers from the Asus site, this machine works like a charm. Plays 1080p video great, plays HD youtube videos great, I'm glad I waited the extra couple months to get this!

Asus' Lamborghini VX5, as all car-branded laptops are, is one for the enthusiast — the sound of a Lamborghini revving when the laptop boots is testament to this. Regardless, Asus' VX5 is a luxury that more than just car enthusiasts will appreciate, and although not as fast as its Italian namesake (or perhaps, German considering the current owners), it does manage a decent amount of performance.

It's not, say, Alienware-ridiculous-fast, but it does have a moderately grunty GeForce GT 130M, 4GB RAM and a Core 2 Quad Q9000 @ 2GHz. Dual 500GB hard drives and a Blu-ray drive also make this one of the more endowed laptops out there, but what really tips the scales is the leather wrist rest, which makes typing on the VX5's backlit chiclet-style keyboard an enjoyable experience (as well as minimising sweat).

The ceramic touchpad is a nice touch as well — although the non-uniform shape means there are dead zones around the demarcated touch area — something you soon adapt to. We do find ourselves missing the multi-touch touchpad Asus has been using lately though — the VX5 features Synaptic's single touch pad instead. Nestled between the far-too-difficult-to-press mouse buttons is a fingerprint reader.

The 16-inch, 1366x768 screen is nice, and at the top is a 2.0-megapixel sapphire crystal webcam — in theory a notch above the usual PC fare. Sadly, it was quite slow above the 0.3 megapixel resolution of 640x480, and we didn't notice any solid image quality improvements.

The rest of the laptop is all silver accents, champagne and piano black (there's also a ceramic white version, should the fancy take you), as many car-inspired grilles as possible and a Lamborghini logo on the rear, lit up by the monitor's backlight. Even the power button is designed in a way to make you feel like you're looking at car decor, with a speed button underneath that enables "TwinTurbo Mode", illuminating the touchpad and insignia on the monitor blue, and overclocking the FSB by 100MHz and the GPU by 25MHz when the laptop is plugged into the wall.

For a reasonably hefty laptop with a subwoofer, the VX5's sound is disappointingly weedy and lacking punch, with Karnivool's Themata and Muse's Hysteria sounding like pale imitations of their former selves.

Under the monitor is a button for controlling the ambient sensor (which allows the monitor and keyboard backlight to adjust depending on the ambient light in the room), two buttons for turning on or off the touchpad or keyboard illumination, and finally a battery profile button, which cycles between Entertainment, Quiet Office, Battery Saving and High Performance settings, each adjusting power settings and screen brightness to suit particular situations. All these are overridden if you enter TwinTurbo mode.

The VX5 plays host to four USB ports, one eSATA, HDMI and VGA out, headphone, speaker and microphone jacks, MMC/SD/MS card reader, ExpressCard54 slot and gigabit Ethernet. Bluetooth and 802.11n radios are also included. Vexingly, a hot air vent has been placed on the left-hand side. Given the VX5's spec, this will likely result in left-handed external mouse users potentially getting an uncomfortably warm hand when the machine is working at its hardest.

The VX5 runs off Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and includes a Norton Internet Security 2009 trial, Cyberlink's Power2Go and Microsoft's Office 2007 trial. Accessories include a microfibre sleeve, a cleaning cloth, a story book covering the history of Lamborghini, a quality Logitech NX80 external mouse with pouch (re-branded with Lamborghini and Asus logos) and a Targus mouse pad. It also comes with one of the bigger power supplies we've seen, which reduces the portability.

Asus' Lamborghini VX5 Performance

With a fair bit of grunt behind it, the VX5 performed well in the 3DMark06 and PCMark05 tests, scoring 6512 and 5012 respectively. Engaging TwinTurbo mode, this took performance up a notch to 6719 and 5364, respectively. Whether in TwinTurbo mode or not, the VX5 has a decent amount of guts behind it and should be capable of both gaming on fairly recent titles and office work.

Setting all power-saving features off, screen brightness and volume to maximum and playing back an XviD file, the battery lasted one hour, 24 minutes and 38 seconds, decent considering the hardware involved. Take in mind this is a highly stressing test — casual use would see significantly longer battery life.

Asus' Lamborghini VX5 is a luxury laptop, with a luxury price to match — thankfully justified by the quality of the laptop and package. If you've got a wad of cash burning in your pocket, don't mind a little luxury or want to make a statement, the VX5 might be for you.

In our 2009 Notebook Buyer's Guide, we discussed the merits and perils of CULV based notebooks. This suddenly popular and quickly growing sector looks to bridge the gap between the bargain basement netbook and the full-size notebook. It makes sense to think that a swath of 13.3" to 14" machines would be needed for those who find 10.1" netbook displays too tiny and 15.4" rigs too large, and that's exactly the sweet spot that Asus is attempting to hit with its new UL30 range. The particular model that we're looking at today is the UL30A-A1, though a handful of other configurations will be available as well. This 13.3" machine looks to offer more power than a typical netbook, yet provide nearly the same level of portability and battery life.

The UL30 was just introduced last week along with a few other CULV machines, which stands for Consumer Ultra Low Voltage. This moniker refers to the Intel processor within, which is a more powerful chip than the Atom options found in most netbooks, yet isn't quite as potent as the full-fledged Core 2 Duo CPUs found in most full-size notebooks. Again, this whole machine is about splitting the difference, and we have to admit, it's a fine line to walk...

Are ASUS Laptops Good?

Asus doesn’t actually make computers they make motherboards and video cards that are used in a computer and yes they are a very good brand there have been built numerous computers with Asus boards and they all still work. As a side note, HP uses ASUS on many of there computers.

Some voices say that they are very low in terms of processing power, so here are some reasons: they should use a Linux based OS on all their products because it more clean and offers a higher performance than the others, and this aspect comes with good and bad effects, like less compatibility with most of the applications, but more system stability. Another aspect which doesn’t bring satisfaction to customers is that they have a small screen and also a small hard disk and, in the same style, a tiny keyboard.

On the pro side though, the whole unit is tiny for a laptop and that is very important aspect for those who travel very much and need a small device.

The prices Asus offers are also small, and this is very important, because price is one of the most important factors of influence on the purchasing decision, most of the time. A very good thing is that they have built in Wi-Fi and this is a sign that latest models of laptops are adapting for the fast rythm of the society. They don’t use on their systems Windows, but Linux, which still has some security lacks, but still remains more stable and capable.

Asus also offers 2 years warranty for every product they offer, which is very good, and many of their customers said that the laptops last much more longer than that 2 years period.

As an answer to “Are Asus laptops good?” , I would say that Asus are very good on the components’ niche, but they also have full systems which are very appreciated and competitive on the market. Most Taiwanese laptop manufacturers’ products have high performance/cost ratio, such as Asus, Acer and BenQ just to name a few.

The Asus G71GX has in this series several models that mainly differ in the built-in processor, but otherwise it proves this notebook to be a dream for the users who are into gaming. But let’s start from the beginning, considering its aspect which strikes you from the very first view: a design of the case that reveals red surfaces with glossy black and matt black disposed in a pattern of a honeycomb. But the appealing of the case fades away while taking a closer look to the crafting: the junction of the upper side and side area reveals to be sharp and hard edged, this is for on side, whereas the other side that has the two clamps presents the right one in a state of levering out of the case without needing to press its closure button. Anyway, the hinges seem to be stable enough for the 4170 grams of the device. The keyboard is pretty much standardized with a defined pressure point of the keys and the touchpad is sized well enough being lit by a blue light to guide your typing better in the dark.

The connectivity of this 17” G71GX is done by a variety of ways, the hidden ones from behind 2 red flaps placed on the case’s left and right side respectively. The one in the left has a Blu-Ray DVD combo drive, an 8-in-1 cardreader, Firewire and 2 USB 2.0 ports rest. The right side presents an ExpressCard slot, a Bluetooth/WLAN slider, three sound sockets, and other 2 USB 2.0 ports. The back side shows the power socket, an eSATA interface, an HDMI connection, a VGA-out, an RJ45 GB LAN port and a Kensington lock. There are also to be found an incorporated mic and 2 megapixel webcam. There is an integrated Express Gate which is worth mentioning, as it enables to boot a tool to access various mini applications without the need to start the notebook’s OS. The display of 17” with 1440 x 900 resolution is reflective, therefore not suitable for outdoor notebook’s handling. The HDMI port allows you to connect an external monitor and get a resolution of up to FullHD – 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The performance is rendered by Intel Core 2 Duo (1066 MHz FSB, 6 MByte L2 cache) processor and can be increased from 2.66 to 2.78 GHz. The Geforce GTX 260M proves to be efficient with 1 GB DDR3-VRAM used as the graphic card. The 3DMark05 reveals 15328 points and the further the tests are performed for 3DMarko6 it presents 9537 points where the 2408 points were attributed to CPU. So, the final 3DMark Vantage results are 3918 points for graphic, 21384 points for CPU and a total of 4929 points rating the notebook somewhere in the average of its competitors’ benchmarks at some features and higher scoring when it came to system memory and hard disk capacity of 640GBs.

Going back to the main feature of Asus G71GX, in regard to the gaming performance, the conclusions are that the notebook presents the games in a smooth manner going from high to maximum details, but the Geforce GTX260M performance is around 15% lower that the one presented in Radeon HD4850 for the similar notebooks, such as MSI GT725, but for the gaming lovers, Asus G71GX can be seen as a dream that comes true.
